Activities

There are plenty of activities to do in the area besides visiting nearby cities or simply doing nothing at the swimming pool.

  • The wooded, hilly area around Casa Sulla Collina is perfect for an adventurous nature walk, a running session, or a bicycle tour (bikes for rent nearby). Who knows, you might even come across a wild boar, a fox, a porcupine or a deer. Exploring the region on horseback or with the a Vespa (!) are also among the possibilities.
  • During a daytrip to Lake Trasimeno you can simply relax by the water, enjoy water sports, or take the ferry to one of the islands.
Do you prefer the seaside? Casa Sulla Collina is more or less equidistant from the Mediterranean (less than 2 hours by car) and the Adriatic coast (less than 2h30min by car).
  • “La vita è troppo breve per mangiare e bere male”. An Italian holiday would not be an Italian holiday without the culinary, cultural experience. Try some local wine, visit an olive grove, enjoy regional dishes in authentic restaurants. The possibilities are endless.
  • Our personal favourite is Fattoria La Vialla. The family farm located in Castiglion Fibocchi (AR), in the beautiful Chianti region, focuses solely on home-grown organic food. You will find wine, olive oil, antipasti, pasta, pecorino, etc. In short, all the best that Italy has to offer, gathered in one fantastic place.
  • There is also good news for those who like to stroll and browse the stalls of a market. Tuscany’s most famous antiques fair is held every first weekend in the historic centre of Arezzo. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Who knows, there might even be a traditional folk festival or a concert with world famous musicians in the area during your stay at Casa Sulla Collina.

JUNE

  • Civitella – Il Sarapino: During the first weekend of June, a rather strange spectacle called the ‘Sarapino’ is organised in the neighbouring village of Civitella. Sarapino is a contraction of the words Saracino and Ape. Saracino is a medieval joust in which a rider on horseback must hit a stationary target at full speed. However, in Il Sarapino, the participant is not on horseback, but is standing upright on an Ape (the three-wheeled vehicle that is so popular in Italy with small traders to be able to deliver their goods everywhere in the narrow streets). This unique spectacle was organised for the first time in the 1950s and this tradition has been preserved ever since.
  • Arezzo – Giostra del Saracino: The Giostra del Saracino is a medieval jousting tournament in which the knights of each of the city’s four quartieri (neighbourhoods) compete. It is held at night on the third or fourth Saturday of June, and during the day on the first Sunday of September in Piazza Grande. Tickets are available a week before the event from an office on Via della Bicchieraia. A small exhibition of costumes and banners from the event can be seen in the Palazzo Comunale (town hall); entrance via the tourist information office.

JULY

  • Siena – Il Palio: The world famous ‘Il Palio’ is held every year on July 2nd and on August 16th. A tradition dating back to the year 1287, where representatives of the 17 neighbourhoods race on horseback through the medieval streets and across the sloping square Piazza del Campo.
  • Civitella – Cena del Cinghiale: On the 2nd Saturday of July in Civitella there is the Cena del Cinghiale. An annual food festival in the historic centre, where you eat dishes based on wild boar served at long tables. A unique experience!
  • Civitella – Teatro sotto le Stelle: Throughout the month of July, concerts and theatrical performances, called Teatro sotto le Stelle, are held in La Rocca, the castle ruins of Civitella.
  • Lucca – Lucca Summer Festival: A yearly music festival in the historic centre of Lucca where many international artists have performed in previous editions (e.g. David Bowie, James Brown, Mark Knopfler , Jamiroquai, Seal, Zucchero, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart, Oasis, Anastacia, Giorgia, Green Day, Ennio Morricone and The Rolling Stones).

AUGUST

  • Civitella – Calici di Stelle: Every year around the 10th of August, you will find stalls on the various squares displaying regional wines and local products which you can taste and buy.
  • Civitella – Cena di fine Estate: On the last Saturday of August, long tables are set up along the streets of the historic centre of Civitella, to festively end the summer with typical Tuscan dishes on the menu.
